Help Stop Judge Kavanaugh From Overturning Roe v. Wade!

Dear Friend of CFI,

You already know that President Trump has promised to nominate Supreme Court justices who will overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark Court decision upholding women’s right to abortion. His nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh is a promise kept. Kavanaugh’s hostility to abortion rights is already on the record, but now we have our clearest sign yet that Kavanaugh would completely strip these rights by taking the unprecedented step of overturning Roe:

When asked directly about his position on Roe during an August 23 meeting with Senator Cory Booker, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Kavanaugh would not rule out overturning the decision.

It’s up to the Senate to stop this nomination. That means every Senator needs to hear from you. It’s especially important for swing-vote Senators in Alabama, Alaska, Indiana, Maine, Missouri, North Dakota, and West Virginia to hear us from now until the fight is over. In this fight, every voice counts, so even if you don’t live in one of these states, please call your senators now.

The religious right has worked feverishly to impose their theology on us through the courts. In Kavanaugh, they’ve found a Supreme Court nominee who will impose the scientifically baseless notion of “life at conception” over a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body.

Kavanaugh’s confirmation would wrench our freedom from religious privilege for a generation or longer. Countless women would die as a result of unsafe, “back-alley” abortions. Together, we must stand up to protect our secular government from ancient, life-ruining myths. Please tell your Senators to oppose Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

Judge Kavanaugh’s judicial record is littered with blatant examples of his support for religious and Christian privilege:

  • In the case of Garza v. Hargan, Judge Kavanaugh allowed the government to stop an undocumented minor from accessing abortion care, a decision later overturned by the full panel of the D.C. Circuit.
  • In a brief in Santa Fe v. Doe, Kavanaugh argued that not allowing prayers over a megaphone at a public school would lead to “the full extermination of private religious speech from the public schools.”
  • In Priests for Life v. HHS, he dissented from the majority on the non-profit exemption to the Affordable Care Act’s Contraceptive Mandate, saying that having to  sign a form to opt out of providing contraceptive coverage would be an unacceptable burden on the non-profit’s religious rights.
  • In Newdow v. Roberts, regarding “so help me God” in the presidential oath of office, Kavanaugh wrote to express his opinion that such public and official use of religion was permissible despite Article VI of the Constitution and the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment forbidding religious tests for public office.

Our constitutional right to freedom of and from religion is more gravely threatened now than at any time in generations. Please tell your Senators to protect separation of church and state by opposing Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court.

Note: the Title field below is required by the United States government database that sorts these messages and directs them to the correct representative's office. We unfortunately cannot customize the honorifics available or make the field optional, as that would cause the database to reject the message. We recommend choosing Dr. for those who use gender-neutral honorifics.

Zip Codes: Sections of many zip codes appear in multiple legislative districts. To accurately find your legislators the system often requires a full Zip+4 Code. If you do not know your +4, we recommend using the US Postal Service website.
