The Importance of Politics to the Gay Community
September 6, 2011

Ok, I will admit that I am not the smartest person in the world. I am not the most politically-aware individual. The thing I do is try. I watch the news as often as I can. I want to make sure I am aware of what is going on in the world today. One thing I get so tired of hearing from both the gay community and the rest of the country is how they don’t care about politics. Now, this is a rant that anyone who knows me knows I make on a regular basis. As a matter of fact I think I have done so in the early part of this very blog…not sure. I want to address (or maybe readdress) the topic of political awareness ESPECIALLY in the gay community.

Religion in the wild is poisonous to democracy. Domesticated varieties claim they invented democracy. Only naturalism can really make democracy work.

Music Monday: First Aid Kit – “Hard Believer”
September 5, 2011

Welcome to the second installment of Music Monday! This week’s featured artist is a relatively new favorite of mine and a sharp contrast to Tom Waits from last week. The folkish sister duo from Sweden, First Aid Kit, came to my attention over two years ago when I was shown thier cover of Fleet Foxes’ “Tiger Mountain Peasant Song.” I had almost forgotten about then until about a year and a half ago when I came across one of thier originals “Hard Believer,” which is today’s Music Monday song of the week.

More Hate from Taxpayer-Funded Catholic Schools
September 4, 2011

Members of a Toronto Catholic District School Board are living in a magical fantasy land where they feel they have the right and privilege to discriminate against those who do not adhere to the lifestyle dictated by the Church.

Faith Alone…er… and Evidence!

The following is an excerpt from a little comment exchange I had earlier on the blog.

Refuting Woo
September 1, 2011

First off, what is Woo? For our purposes it’s going to include just about any example of pseudoscience or superstition that you can think of, like homeopathy, anti-vaccination, and religious claims. Because most of these groups basically use the exact same arguments in support of their brand of woo, the term should be interchangeable.

Antitheist Apologetics
August 31, 2011

This is an antitheist apologetics post by Seth Kurtenbach. It is meant to show how easily one can make a ridiculous theological argument. Of course I don’t endorse any of the premises that follow, but many theists do, and so I show that by twisting faith-based beliefs one can conjure up almost any argument.

Time for Action: the FDA and Homeopathic Drugs
August 30, 2011

The website of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, the division of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) responsible for evaluating the efficacy of drugs, proudly proclaims that it “promotes and protects the health of Americans by assuring that all prescription and over-the-counter drugs are safe and effective.” (bolding in original) Sadly, this is not a true statement. The FDA allows homeopathic drugs to be marketed without requiring the manufacturers to establish that their drugs are effective for their intended use. This free pass to homeopathic junk needs to stop, and that is why CFI and CSI have filed a formal petition asking the FDA to hold homeopathic over-the-counter drugs to the same standards as conventional (i.e., real) medicine.

Lucky for You, Science is Not a Religion
August 30, 2011

So, as everyone has heard, Hurricane Irene is crawling its way up the East Coast. Scientists have built models to determine its path, community members have reinforced homes and businesses, families and friends have offered hands of help, and, last and definitely least, the priests and pastors have offered prayer and spiritual guidance.

JREF $1 Million Challenge Delights and Amuses Psychic Carla Baron
August 29, 2011

Carla Baron, who claims to have psychic powers, is not interested in getting James Randi’s $1 million prize for proving her abilities, but she does find it “endlessly amusing.”
