Actual evidence is to the contrary. Children , especially under the age of 7, are uncritical little sponges. They absorb their parent’s values and beliefs uncritically, almost as if by osmosis.

If they are raised by secular parents, the child wouldn’t absorb religion under the age of 7 unless they were exposed at daycare. That’s what I’m s…[Read more]

I don’t think a child would believe, at least not until s/he ends up being exposed. S/he could go until preschool, around 4 maybe, hear about god from another kid, especially if it is a secular daycare or s/he might go until public school, if s/he lucky. Either way, in this society the child would be exposed. After that, s/he may end up scared…[Read more]

  • Because I think all of us or at least most of us agree that all religions are cults, so I’m not sure where this discussion will go, but I’d like to see where it goes. I do think those who truly believe it are very well brainwashed or are too afraid not to believe because they are scared something bad will happen to them, which is basically what…[Read more]

  • Mriana replied to the topic What IS race? in the forum General Discussion 2 weeks, 4 days ago

I’m with Lausten. I’m not so sure it is “incredibly simple to identify the ancestry of most people”. There’s too many genes in the mix for most people to go around labeling them this or that. Besides, it’s offensive for some, if not a lot of people. I’m not the only who refuses to identify their “race”. From what I’ve been told, it happens…[Read more]

My wife is 1/8 Cree. She is fair skinned and I don’t know if anyone could tell she had native Canadian ancestors. Her Mother is 1/4 Cree and is immediately identifiable as native Canadian. Her sister is very much in the middle, with some features that indicate her native side and some her primarily Russian side. Sadly, both my kids missed out on g…

What is the value of such a rough but complex attempt at classification?

Seems to me such classification is a means to decide who is privileged and who is not. If we continue to insist on “races” and privilege based on whiteness, then twin who looks white will receive “white privilege”, which is unfair given that they come from the…[Read more]

Exactly, LoisL. You understand what I’m trying to say and even know what I’m trying to say. You are also right that the idea of race is a visual phenomenon- one that has to be wanted or if not wanted it’s not the first thing that comes to mind when looking at a person.

  • Mriana replied to the topic What IS race? in the forum General Discussion 2 weeks, 5 days ago

It’s so poorly defined that the community that created it (scientists from the 16th century) now want to distance themselves from it (scientists today).

    Outdated maybe a good description.

That said,3point14rat, let’s say you have two people who are both 1/2 black and 1/2 white marry and have kids. The gene pool could produce a child who looks w…[Read more]

I think Lausten stated it well. Live Science isn’t a perfect source of info, but even they said the differences are small. One can have European features and the only thing showing they have African (black) origins (say 1/16) is maybe the texture of their hair, even though it is blonde. How would you even know just by looking at them that their…[Read more]

Lausten said, I see some hair splitting going on here. I’ll try this for a definition along some guidelines; There are traits that are associated with genes that can be traced back to geographic regions. These traits might be typical, but they are not consistent, so there is always some danger in attempting to use them to identify the geographic o…

So we are all identical looking? There are no visible, genetically determined differences that can be used to identify our genetic history?

Race obviously exists, regardless of whether or not the word is twisted by the most ignorant and/or cruel of us to justify saying and doing horrible things.

In my mind pretty much yes. However, the…[Read more]

3point14rat said, Then, in my mind, ‘ethnicity’ and ‘race’ are synonyms.

They aren’t synonyms either. I took sociology courses years ago and learned there is no such thing as race and that we are all part of the human species. It has nothing to do with being a fan or not being a fan of the word ‘race’ as it is that is an inaccurate word used by…[Read more]

I’m not sure if Celtic, Caucasian, Anglo-Saxon or some other word is the best label for my race.

That would be your ethnicity. There really is no such thing as race. We are all part of the human species though.

  • Mriana replied to the topic What IS race? in the forum General Discussion 3 weeks ago

Lois right. I missed the identical part, but theoretically, I guess an egg could split with recessive on one half and dominant on the other half, but that is a far fetch theory.

  • Mriana replied to the topic What IS race? in the forum General Discussion 3 weeks ago

IMHO, “race” is a human created word meant to encourage racism. Species, on the other hand, is what distinguishes between humans, cats, dogs, etc. However, there is the human race, but that is the same as saying the human species. There is no races within species though. If there were, we couldn’t sexually relate and procreate- the picture…[Read more]

No, the citizens of the U.S. are not pushing for war with Iran. The occupant of the White House and his cronies are. Why is it people in other countries think people in the U.S. want various things, when it is the stupid people in our government, their cronies, and a few minions pushing for these things? Personally, I’m not a fan of the dotard…[Read more]

All we really need to do is bring the world pop growth rate down to 0% per year.
