A Toolkit for Communicating with Believers | Pass the Torch Skills Seminar

June 26, 2023

Whether its the belief in popular science fiction topics such as UFOs or cryptids, the pseudo scientific practice of homeopathy and astrology, or deeply help philosophical and spiritual positions of the devoutly religious, the very nature of a skeptic or secular organization is to engage with belief. In this Pass the Torch Skills Seminar, Susan Gerbic, Richard Saunders and Kenny Biddle will take a look at some common issues you may encounter when participating in discussion on contentious topics. How can you welcome a critical conversation on these topics while remaining respectful, open-minded, and fair? The way you approach these issues could be the difference between your group’s success and failure as a productive educational outlet for your community.

About the Panel:

Susan Gerbic, affectionately called the Wikipediatrician, is the founder of Guerrilla Skepticism on Wikipedia (GSoW), Monterey County Skeptics and is a self-proclaimed skeptical junkie. In 2018, Susan founded and manages About Time a non-profit organization focusing on scientific skepticism and activism. In 2022 Gerbic became the CFI Ambassador with the goal of growing the community.

Richard Saunders is an Australian skeptic, podcaster and professional origamist. He has presented on skepticism, represented the Australian Skeptics on television and radio shows, and is the co-host of The Skeptic Zone podcast.

Kenny Biddle has been investigating (and solving) mysteries for over two decades. His investigations have entailed everything from debunking ghost hunting gadgets and famous haunted houses to exposing psychics and recreating photographic “evidence” of the afterlife. He hosts a livestream show each week, The Skeptical Help Bar, providing an informed skeptical approach to paranormal topics. He also writes an online column, “A Closer Look,” for Skeptical Inquirer and produces the vlog series Ghosts in the Machine detailing his various investigations. Biddle frequently attends paranormal-themed events, where he often sets up a “Skeptical Help Booth” to bring skepticism and critical thinking where it is much needed. He’s a CSI Fellow and the new Chief Investigator for the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry.
