How to Market Your Group Events | Pass the Torch Skills Seminar

March 22, 2023

How do we effectively employ social media to expand our audience? What are some best practices for organizational newsletters or press releases? Is it possible to connect with local news outlets and community groups to spread the word? These are all important questions – and they point to a gap in our movement’s collective skill set, particularly when we compare ourselves to the orchestrated communications coming out of religious organizations and other pseudoscientific peddlers of nonsense.

In an effort to help equip our leaders with the tools they need to thrive, we addressed these topics – and more – at the first Pass the Torch Skills Seminar on “Marketing and Media,” live on Zoom.

If you were unable to attend live, fret not! You can still join CFI Ambassador Susan Gerbic and our panel of media experts for a detailed exploration of the ways in which your secular or skeptics group can take advantage of the available media, both digital and traditional print, to market your group’s activities!

Susan Gerbic speaks on the importance of visuals including handouts, posters, merchandise – materials that can be distributed to your attendees, or people passing by, to bring more attention to your group.

Jeff Dellinger, Communications Manager at the Center for Inquiry, discusses some best-practices for constructing and disseminating newsletters and press releases.

Julia Hassan, Multi-Channel Marketing Associate at the Center for Inquiry, spoke about when and how to use social media and get the most for your time and money.

Kathy McKenzie, member of Monterey County Skeptics and a longtime journalist, explained how the group made their SkeptiCamp a success through a combination of smart event planning, outreach to local media, and using online tools and social media.

If you have any questions – please feel free to reach out to any of our panelists, or email [email protected] with the subject “Pass the Torch”.
