On August 21, 1959, Hawaii became the 50th state in the United States of America.
And on November 2, 2019, Hawaii will become the 50th state to host a workshop by TIES, the Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science!
Launched in 2015 by the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason & Science, now part of the Center for Inquiry, TIES gives middle school teachers the tools they need to effectively teach evolution and answer its critics through in-person workshops, online seminars, and a growing library of free educational resources.
With a workshop to be held on November 2 for the Hawaii Science Teachers Association Conference at McKinley High School in Honolulu, presented by TIES associate Kenny Coogan, the Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science will have reached the 50-state milestone.
“Congratulations to all of the teachers who have made TIES the amazing program it has become,” said TIES director Bertha Vazquez, herself a middle school science teacher in the Miami area. “Over one thousand middle school science teachers have taken our workshops and viewed our webinars, increasing the quality of evolution education in this country.”
Since its founding, Vazquez has led TIES to become a celebrated and invaluable program for educators, parents, and students across the country. TIES has provided free training in 161 workshops and webinars for over a thousand teachers, recruited a talented group of 70 official presenters, hosted special events with authors and experts in science and education, and helped open the minds of countless students to the wonders of evolution.
Special guest presenters have included such figures as evolutionary biologist and author of The Selfish Gene, Richard Dawkins; Abby Hafer, author of Darwin’s Apostles and Everything You Know about Sex Is Wrong; cognitive scientist Lindsay Portnoy, author of Designed to Learn; Kathleen McAuliffe, author of This is Your Brain on Parasites; Blair Lee, author of The Science of Climate Change; Gene Levinson, author of Rethinking Evolution; author of the children’s science book Grandmother Fish, Jonathan Tweet; and many others.
