Science Author Michael Ryan to Present Special Second Webinar Event Feb. 1

The Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science (TIES), which has helped hundreds of middle school teachers across the country get the skills and confidence they need to teach the wonders of evolution, will step into the digital realm with its first online training workshop on Wednesday, January 31. Then on Thursday, February 1, TIES will host a special webinar event with Michael Ryan, author of A Taste for the Beautiful: Evolution by Attraction.

TIES is a program of the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason & Science and the Center for Inquiry, and its mission is to train middle school science teachers in the most up-to-date concepts of evolutionary science, preparing them to better communicate their subject, navigate anti-evolution backlash, and inspire young minds to develop a love of science. Now with 35 presenters, TIES has held 75 training workshops for middle school teachers in 31 states, and provides free educational resources on its website.

Wednesday’s webinar, “Evolution for Educators,” will inform interested science teachers, homeschooling parents, and other curious participants about the most up-to-date concepts of natural selection, common ancestry, and diversity in order for them to confidently cover the topics in their classrooms and fulfill their curriculum requirements. The session will be facilitated by Bertha Vazquez, director of TIES and a Miami-area middle school science teacher. Last year, Vazquez was given the Evolution Education Award by the National Association of Biology Teachers.

On Thursday, TIES will present a webinar featuring Michael Ryan, Clark Hubbs Regents Professor in Zoology at the University of Texas, Austin and author of A Taste for the Beautiful: Evolution by Attraction. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Dr. Ryan will discuss the astonishing story of how the female brain drives the evolution of beauty in animals and humans.
