Doug Cowan is a professor of Religious Studies at Renison University College at the University of Waterloo, and specializes in religion and film, television, and popular culture. Lately, he has become particularly interested in the spiritual relationship we have with things, with the objects around us and with which we fill our lives. He has published widely on different aspects of religion and film, fundamentalist Christianity, modern Paganism, religion and the Internet, and new religious movements. For many years he was a co-general editor of the premier journal of new religions study, Nova Religio, and chair of the New Religious Movements Group of the American Academy of Religion.
