Ronald A. Lindsay

Center for Inquiry · Washington, DC

Ronald A. Lindsay, J.D., Ph.D. is by training and experience both a lawyer and a philosopher. An honors graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, he practiced for twenty-six years with the national law firm of Seyfarth Shaw LLP prior to joining the Center for Inquiry, where he served as president & CEO from 2008 to 2016. Dr. Lindsay received his Ph.D. from Georgetown University, specializing in bioethics. He has had articles published in peer-reviewed journals such as The Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics, the Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal, and The American Journal of Bioethics.

He has authored two books, Future Bioethics: Overcoming Taboos, Myths, and Dogmas, published by Prometheus Books in 2008, and The Necessity of Secularism: Why God Can’t Tell Us What to Do, published by Pitchstone Publishing (December 2014). The Necessity of Secularism has received high praise. According to the philosopher Russell Blackford, “The Necessity of Secularism is a state-of-the-art defense of secular reasoning — in government, public debate, and moral deliberation.”

Reflecting his research in bioethics and his interest in assisted dying, Dr. Lindsay is also the author of the entry on “Euthanasia” in the prestigious International Encyclopedia of Ethics (Wiley Blackwell, 2013).

Dr. Lindsay has spoken before numerous audiences and has appeared on radio and television to discuss issues relating to religion, separation of church and state, and bioethics.
